全篇只用了三种动作:先给时间对照(had a brutal coming of age → have dramatically turned their fortunes round);再做让步(Some of this is simply the way of the world.);最后分层归因(part of it is luck / A bigger part of the story, however, is innovation and hard work)。
(Nostalgia reliably runs on a two-decade timetable. 八个词下一个判断);二是「用数据替代形容词」(twice the share ... that Gen X did at the same age、the fifth-most streamed series)——全文没有一句「很厉害」,却处处显得有据。
1MILLENNIALS, BORN between the early 1980s and mid-1990s, had a brutal coming of age. Many graduated in the wake of the global financial crisis. Youth unemployment rose above 50% in some parts of Europe, leading to a talk of a “lost generation”. Living with their parents and deprived of the prospect of owning a home, they were lectured by unsympathetic elders not to spend so much money on brunch.
2Today millennials, aged around 30-45, have dramatically turned their fortunes round. They earn more than any other recent generation did at the same age, and are catching up in terms of home-ownership (see Finance & economics section). At the same time, millennial-era culture is enjoying a revival in television, music, gaming and even fashion, where their notoriously tight trousers are cool once again (see Culture section).
3Some of this is simply the way of the world. As generations age, they get better jobs, earn more and buy homes. Millennials are not the first to reach middle age and revive the culture of their youth. The 1970s witnessed a 1950s revival, with a rock’n’roll renaissance, “Happy Days” and “Grease”. In the 1990s bell-bottoms and tie-dye emerged from the back of wardrobes. Nostalgia reliably runs on a two-decade timetable.
4Yet the millennial comeback is different. True, part of it is luck. The generation’s early economic misfortune was later counterbalanced by serendipity, when the covid-19 pandemic triggered the early retirement of many older workers. The result was a senior-management vacuum—filled by millennials.
5A bigger part of the story, however, is innovation and hard work. The leading lights of the tech industry, which has created enormous wealth, include many millennials. They account for more than twice the share of America’s billionaires that Gen X did at the same age. Tech’s next great leap, artificial intelligence, is likely only to strengthen their position. The bosses leading the revolution, such as Dario Amodei, Mark Zuckerberg and Sam Altman, are themselves millennials.
6Tech has also boosted millennials’ cultural comeback. Online platforms encourage people to bathe in the content of their youth. YouTube and Spotify are nostalgia machines. Services like Netflix, with their vast libraries, introduce new generations to millennial hits like “The Big Bang Theory”, from 2007, which is the fifth-most streamed series in America this year. Meanwhile, social media have terrified Hollywood. Hence all those sequels and reboots—safer bets than original projects. “The Devil Wears Prada 2” is one of the world’s highest-grossing films this year.
7Even those who dread the return of skinny jeans should cheer the millennial revival. The generation’s economic story shows that “lost” cohorts can find their way. Policymakers should note that millennials’ prospects improved thanks to markets and events, not the state-funded rescue that some once called for. As AI causes alarm about young people’s job opportunities, the millennial bounce offers a cautious cause for optimism.
8Millennials’ cultural comeback has lessons, too. Many will look at the glut of 1990s reboots, such as a new “Baywatch” series, and feel that Hollywood’s creativity needs saving. But once more, technology is helping. The infinite breadth of online platforms means that you have plenty of alternatives if millennial favourites are not to your taste. The vast back-catalogues stored on these platforms mean that the hits of every era are available to everyone. Twenty years ago, one generation bore the brunt of the financial crisis. Today, all generations should celebrate the millennials’ deserved rebound.
MILLENNIALS, BORN between the early 1980s and mid-1990s, had a brutal coming of age.——born ... 第二句 in the wake of(在…… Youth unemployment rose above 50% in some parts of Europe;注意 “lost generation” 加了引号——作者是在引用当时的流行说法,而不是自己的判断,这类引号在评论写作中等于「划清界限」。 Living with their parents and deprived of the prospect of owning a home, they were lectured by unsympathetic elders not to spend so much money on brunch.——句首是两个并列的分词短语作状语(Living ...
They earn more than any other recent generation did at the same age, and are catching up in terms of home-ownership.——注意两处技术细节:① than any other recent generation did,用 did 替代前面的 earn,避免重复;② at the same age(在同一年龄时)是「世代比较」必须交代的口径——不写这四个词,比较就不成立,因为年轻人的收入本来就低于中年人。第三句把话题从经济转向文化:is enjoying a revival in television, music, gaming and even fashion 用四个领域并列,even 放在最后一项,暗示「连时尚都回来了」;where their notoriously tight trousers are cool once again 是定语从句,notoriously(众所周知地,此处带调侃)修饰 tight——不说「紧身裤」而说「出了名紧的裤子」,一个副词就带出了当年被嘲笑的记忆。
Some of this is simply the way of the world.(其中有些不过是世事常理)——simply 一词刻意降低了对手解释的门槛,为下段的 Yet 蓄势。第二句用三个动词并列讲常识:get better jobs, earn more and buy homes,句式极简,与内容的「平平无奇」正好匹配。 Millennials are not the first to reach middle age and revive the culture of their youth 用 not the first to do(并非第一个做…… 第四、五句各给一例:1970 年代的 1950 年代复兴——a rock’n’roll renaissance(摇滚乐的复兴)、Happy Days(《欢乐时光》,1974 年开播,背景设在 1950 年代)与 Grease(《油脂》,1978 年电影,同样以 1950 年代为背景);1990 年代则是 bell-bottoms(喇叭裤)与 tie-dye(扎染)emerged from the back of wardrobes(从衣柜深处被翻出来)——这个说法很妙:旧衣服不是被「发明」的,而是一直在衣柜里,只是又被拿出来穿。末句 Nostalgia reliably runs on a two-decade timetable.
A bigger part of the story The generation’s early economic misfortune was later counterbalanced by serendipity, when the covid-19 pandemic triggered the early retirement of many older workers.——主干是被动语态 was counterbalanced by serendipity(被意外的好运抵消),counterbalance(使平衡、抵消)是精准的动词;serendipity(机缘巧合、意外的好运)是全段的题眼:不是他们争取来的,而是碰上的;when ... The result was a senior-management vacuum—filled by millennials.
A bigger part of the story, however, is innovation and hard work.——这是标准的「分层归因」句式:part of it is ... / a bigger part of the story, however, is ...,份额一大一小,作者的解释自然胜出,而无需贬低「运气」那一部分。 The leading lights of the tech industry ... include many millennials 中 leading lights(领军人物、标杆人物)是固定短语,比 leaders 多一层「灯塔」的意象;which has created enormous wealth 是非限定性定语从句,插在主语与谓语之间,补充「这个行业为什么重要」。 They account for more than twice the share of America’s billionaires that Gen X did at the same age.——这句压缩了三层结构,读时应拆开:① account for ... the share of America’s billionaires(占美国亿万富翁的比例);② more than twice(是……的两倍多);③ that Gen X did at the same age(相当于 X 世代在同一年龄时的占比),did 替代前面的 accounted for。 Tech’s next great leap, artificial intelligence, is likely only to strengthen their position.——artificial intelligence 是 great leap 的同位语;only(只会)加强判断,表示「没有别的可能」。
Tech has also boosted millennials’ cultural comeback. 第二句 bathe in the content of their youth(沉浸在自己年轻时代的内容里)——bathe in 本义「沐浴于」,此处把「刷老剧」写得颇有画面。 YouTube and Spotify are nostalgia machines. Services like Netflix, with their vast libraries, introduce new generations to millennial hits like “The Big Bang Theory”, from 2007, which is the fifth-most streamed series in America this year.——主干 Services ... introduce A to B(把 A 介绍给 B);with their vast libraries 是插入语说明原因;from 2007 补充年份;which is the fifth-most streamed series 是定语从句。 Meanwhile, social media have terrified Hollywood. Hence all those sequels and reboots—safer bets than original projects.——Hence(因此)直接引出因果;safer bets(更保险的赌注)点出动机:不是好莱坞没创意,而是不敢冒险;这个解释比痛骂「创意枯竭」高明,因为它给出了机制。
Even those who dread the return of skinny jeans should cheer the millennial revival.——用「讨厌紧身牛仔裤的人」这一具体人群起手,把轻松的时尚话题接入严肃判断;skinny jeans(紧身牛仔裤)正是上文 notoriously tight trousers 的正式说法,同一事物前后用两种说法,是英文写作避免重复的常规手法;should cheer(也该叫好)直接亮出作者态度。 The generation’s economic story shows that “lost” cohorts can find their way.——给 lost 重新加上引号,完成一次反讽式回收:十年前别人叫他们「失落」,今天作者用引号把这个标签打回去;find their way(找到自己的路)是温和的比喻。 Policymakers should note that millennials’ prospects improved thanks to markets and events, not the state-funded rescue that some once called for.——thanks to A, not B 的对比结构把「市场与事件」与「国家救助」对立起来,这是《经济学人》一贯的立场表达;that some once called for(某些人当年曾呼吁的)用定语从句把对手的主张一笔带过——点了名,又不与之纠缠。末句 As AI causes alarm about young people’s job opportunities, the millennial bounce offers a cautious cause for optimism.——as 引导时间/伴随状语,把话题接到当下的 AI 焦虑;a cautious cause for optimism(谨慎乐观的理由)是极地道的搭配,比直接说 optimistic 有分寸得多——「有理由乐观,但要谨慎」,这正是本刊的语体。
Millennials’ cultural comeback has lessons, too. Many will look at the glut of 1990s reboots ... and feel that Hollywood’s creativity needs saving.——glut(供应过剩、泛滥)一词自带负面判断,与上段的 safer bets 呼应;Baywatch(《海滩救护队》,1989 年开播的救生员剧)是「重启潮」的具体例子。 But once more, technology is helping.(但再一次,技术在帮忙)——once more 回指上段「技术也助推文化回归」,结构上形成回环。 The infinite breadth of online platforms means that you have plenty of alternatives if ...(广度 → 有替代)与 The vast back-catalogues ... mean that the hits of every era are available to everyone.(库存 → 人人可得)——两句都用 means that 引出结论,句式整齐,是英文并列论证的标准做法。 Twenty years ago, one generation bore the brunt of the financial crisis. Today, all generations should celebrate the millennials’ deserved rebound.——「二十年前 / 今天」的时间对照,与首段的「金融危机」首尾咬合;bore the brunt of(承受……

Five years ago, humanities graduates were the most awkward people at any job fair: résumés went unanswered, and relatives gently suggested they learn something technical. Today the traffic has reversed. Content, brand and communications roles are competing for them, and starting salaries are rising faster than in engineering. Some of this is simply the way of the world—industries expand and contract on their own rhythm. True, part of it is timing. A bigger part of the story, however, is that AI has made judgement scarce: machines can now produce prose by the page, but not the decision about which page is worth writing. Five years ago, one group was told to change. Today, an entire industry should be asking what they know that it does not.
Some of this is simply ... True, part of it is ... A bigger part of the story, however, is ... Five years ago, one group ... Today, an entire industry should ...
| 今昔对照开篇 | had a brutal coming of age ... Today millennials ... have dramatically turned their fortunes round | 同一群体两个时间点,只用一个 Today 完成翻转;先抑后扬,读者立刻明白文章要辩什么 |
| 引号划界 | leading to a talk of a “lost generation” ... shows that “lost” cohorts can find their way | 同一标签前后两次加引号:先表示「这是别人的说法」,后表示「这个说法不成立」——首尾完成一次反讽 |
| 让步再推开 | Some of this is simply the way of the world. ... Yet the millennial comeback is different.
| 分层归因 | True, part of it is luck. ... A bigger part of the story, however, is innovation and hard work.
| 以数据代形容词 | more than twice the share ... that Gen X did at the same age / the fifth-most streamed series | 全文没有一句「很厉害」,靠倍数、序数与同期口径建立可信度 |
| 短句定论 | Nostalgia reliably runs on a two-decade timetable. / YouTube and Spotify are nostalgia machines.
| 首尾咬合 | in the wake of the global financial crisis ... bore the brunt of the financial crisis ... deserved rebound | 开头的「金融危机」在结尾被再次提起,中间填入了「应得的反弹」——全文形成闭环,立意落在 deserved 一词上 |
Millennials
「Lost Generation」
本文首段末句 not to spend so much money on brunch 正是这个梗的浓缩版;副标题 and not the avocado sort(不是牛油果那种)也是同一典故的呼应——「该为这代人干一杯,但不是牛油果吐司配的那杯」。
Nostalgia reliably runs on a two-decade timetable Happy Days(1974,背景设于 1950 年代)与 Grease(1978,同样是 1950 年代)是第一个周期的代表作。
Baywatch(《海滩救护队》,1989 年开播):以救生员为主题的剧集,文中拿它的「新版」当「重启潮」的例子。
Sequel(续集)接着原故事往下拍;reboot(重启)保留 IP、换人或重设世界观,从头讲起;remake(翻拍)基本照原样重做。
